Kazik and The Kommander’s Car to be screened at the ‘Untold Stories Film Programme,’
In commemoration of the 66th Anniversary of the Liberation of Auschwitz

Katy Carr and Hannah Lovell’s Kazik and the Kommander’s Car, a 25 minute part-animated
documentary centred around a meeting between Katy and Kazimierz Piechowski (Kazik), who was
imprisoned in Auschwitz in 1940 for being a Polish boy scout and resisting Nazi occupation.The Jewish East End Celebration Society (JEECS), supported by the Borough of Tower Hamlets, is
organising a programme of events for Holocaust Memorial Day (HMD) 2011. All events listed are free,
and open to the public. The theme of HMD 2011 is “Untold Stories.” The programme includes:
 Untold Stories: the survivors of the Rwandan genocide

A virtual exhibition – Untold Stories: the survivors of the Rwandan genocide – a series of remarkable
portraits of survivors of the Rwanda genocide collected by photographer Andrew Sutton over the last ten
years. The exhibition is in association with Survivors Fund (SURF), a London based charity representing
and supporting survivors of the Rwandan genocide in the UK and Rwanda, and will run in tandem with a
series of filmed testimonies of the featured survivors on www.survivors-fund.org.uk.
 Untold Stories Film Programme

A special programme of short films based around the theme of Untold Stories, featuring:
– Drew Sutton’s The Survivors of the Rwandan Genocide: An Untold Story, a 15 minute documentary
on the situation of survivors of the Rwandan genocide today, and in particular the work of AVEGA,
the Association of Widows of the Genocide, to rebuild the lives of survivors today.
– Katy Carr and Hannah Lovell’s Kazik and the Kommander’s Car, a 25 minute part-animated
documentary centred around a meeting between Katy and Kazimierz Piechowski (Kazik), who was
imprisoned in Auschwitz in 1940 for being a Polish boy scout and resisting Nazi occupation.
– Yoav Segal’s No Pasaran, a 20 minute documentary on anti-fascist activism in the East End, the
Battle of Cable Street and the International Brigade. This will be followed by a Q&A with Yoav and his
grandfather, Ubby Cowan, 93 years old, who fought at Cable Street and Shirley Murgraff, whose
brother Sam Russell fought in the International Brigade and features in the film.

 The Holocaust, Second World War and Jewish East End Walk
Details: Sunday 30th January, Midday – 230pm (ending at Nelson Street)
Start: Entrance of Aldgate tube
A walk led by East End expert, and registered Corporation of London walking guide, Clive Bettington.
The walk will cover events including the Battle of Cable Street and the Hughes Mansions disaster. The
walk will end at Nelson Street in time for the Commemoration event. To reserve a place please contact

 The Tower Hamlets Holocaust Memorial Day Commemoration Event
Details: Sunday 30th January, 230pm – 430pm (followed by refreshments)
Venue: East London Central Synagogue, 30-40 Nelson Street, E1 2DE (nr tube Shadwell DLR)
A special commemoration (no booking required) in association with the Swadhinata Trust, featuring:
– The music of Hilda Bronstein, one of the world’s leading Klezmer songstresses who will be singing a
selection of forgotten Yiddish songs with accompaniment.
– A talk by Vera Forster, who was born in Hungary and is a survivor of Auschwitz; she will share her
remarkable story, which she has just published as a memoir, A Daughter of Her Century
– The story of the East End Auxiliary Fire Service from a representative of Firemen Remembered
– The story of the 1943 Bethnal Green Tube Disaster from the Stairway to Heaven Memorial Trust
– Reflections from representatives of the Tower Hamlets Interfaith Forum on Untold Stories.
– The Partisan’s Song, and a special Kaddish (memorial prayer) sung by Barry Davis
