In this four-part series, Katy Carr speaks with US Filmmaker Mary Skinner about Polish heroines of WWII, Irena Sendler and her crew of Mighty Girls. Together they orchestrated the rescue of thousands of Jewish children from the Warsaw Ghetto. Mary Skinner gathered many stories of these women for her film about Irena Sendler and found they were motivated in different ways to risk their lives to rescue and protect the traumatized Jewish children.

We talk about some of these “secondary characters” from Mary’s film in four episodes:

Part 1 Angry Teenagers (Magdalena Grodzka-Guzkowska, Hanna Olechnowicz)

Part 2 Artists (Jadwiga Piotrowska)

Part 3 Social Activists (Ewa Rechtman, Irena Schulz, Maria Kukulska, Jadwiga Deneko)

Part 4 Women of Faith (Zofia Kossak, nuns)

Katy sings ‘Christine the Great,’ a song written for her 5th album Polonia inspired by Krystyna Skarbek (1908–1952), nom de guerre Christine Granville, GM, OBE, Croix de guerre, was the first female agent of the British Special Operations Executive (SOE) and became Churchill’s favourite spy. A beautiful woman (Miss Polonia 1930), superb horsewoman and extraordinary skier, she took on her daring missions successfully and initiated underground resistance and partisan networks across Occupied Poland, Italy and France. The ‘Bond Girl’ character Vesper Lynd in Ian Fleming’s book Casino Royale (1953) was inspired by Skarbek’s prolific wartime achievements.
