Katy Carr speaks with US Film maker Mary Skinner in a series of meetings to discuss the war zone in Ukraine from an artistic and personal perspective. In our third meeting of this series, Katy and Mary discuss the anniversary of the Katyn Massacre 1940 and its impact on the Polish psyche : Q What happens to a people when war crimes against them are lied about, denied and covered up for years? Q How do crimes like these affect survivors of WWII in Poland and the children and grandchildren of those survivors? As women, artists, and the daughters of Polish survivors, Katy and Mary have a profound personal experience with traumatic events in Poland – many of which are barely known outside the country. We talk about how this knowledge has impacted our lives and our art. And how it has contributed to our understanding and empathy for the Ukrainian people. The song that Katy sings is ‘Red Red Rose’ from her album Paszport (2012). The song was written to highlight the many Russian crimes against humanity during WWII and especially the Katyn Massacre where 24,000 Polish Military Officers were murdered in the Katyn forest in defiance of the Geneva convention where Military Officers are protected by law during wartime.
