MEDIA RELEASE SEPTEMBER 2011
Penguin Café to perform at Canary Wharf
Friday 7 October 2011
East Wintergarden, Canary Wharf, London
Pioneers of music experimentation Penguin Café have been confirmed to play Canary Wharf Arts & Events’ After Hours with…’ series. Led by Arthur Jeffes, son of the late Simon Jeffes who founded the original Penguin Café Orchestra in 1972, this talented collective of musicians will play to the spectacular setting of Canary Wharf’s East Wintergarden.
Penguin Café, Arthur Jeffes’ second-generation ensemble of Penguin Café Orchestra, features outstanding musicians including luminaries from The Royal College of Music to Neil Coding of Suede and Gorillaz’ regular Cass Browne. Together they have toured festivals such as The Big Chill, Edinburgh Festival and Bestival and performed a string of special concerts in Spain, Ireland and across Britain since 2009.
Penguin Café’s first official album, A Matter of Life…. is widely regarded as cementing Arthur Jeffes’ right as an exceptional composer. It brings the group’s accessible brand of minimalism to life, alongside radical reworks of the charming, dreamlike arrangements his father created, recognised in later times by the chill-out compilations of Café del Mar. Born of Simon Jeffes’ disillusion with the rigidities of classical music and the limitations of rock, Penguin Café continues the legacy of a music legend with its unique, lasting and unclassifiable style.
Canary Wharf Arts & Events Manager, Sian Astrop said, “The ‘After Hours with…’ series is a perennial favourite on the Canary Wharf Arts & Events calendar, and we are pleased to welcome Penguin Café to our list of exceptional artists that have performed in the East Wintergarden, Canary Wharf’s premier events venue.”
Canary Wharf continues to grow its reputation as a dynamic leisure destination, attracting visitors to its world-class arts and exhibitions, live events, shops, bars and restaurants. Penguin Café will be supported by alt-folk singer Katy Carr.
