An extraordinary chance to see one of the UK’s hottest up-and-coming songwriters. Katy Carr is a fresh and unique talent with sensual and sexy self-penned folk songs, delivered with verve and humour.

Katy and her stunning trio The Aviators combine acoustic instrumentation with electronic effects to bring a new and fresh twist to the female singer-songwriter tradition.

Katy’s album Coquette launched in London in November 2009 to rave reviews from Q Magazine, Maverick and Mojo to name but a few!  Beaford Arts are delighted to be welcoming her to North Devon this March to perform in three small venues where audiences will be able to enjoy Katy’s mesmerizing blend of folk and electronica music.

Katy has collaborated with artists including Nitin Sawhney, Mediaeval Baebes, Patrick Wolf, John Hegley and appeared at festivals including Bestival, Secret Garden Party, Wickerman, Cambridge Folk Festival Green Man Festival, Wychwood, Isle of Wight, Glastonbury, Lost Vagueness.

In attendance will be Kazimierz Piechowski, a former Polish boy scout who managed to carry out a daring escape from Auschwitz in Jun 1942 having spent two years in this WW2 Nazi concentration death camp. Katy Carr wrote a song about the last 80m of his escape called ‘Kommander’s Car’ and recorded her infamous meeting in the documentary directed by Hannah Lovell entitled ‘Kazik and the Kommander’s Car’ in Sept 2009. Having already been shown at the Imperial War Museum this will be the first time the documentary will be played to a predominantly Polish audience.
Expect to hear a story of absolute defiance and bravery and spend the evening with the survivor himself.

Kinoteka on Tour

, a satellite event of the the Polish Cultural Institute project Kinoteka, is a rare opportunity to see some of the best Polish movies in Exeter between Wednesday, March 10 and Saturday, May 15. A short fragment of  the documentary Kazik and the Kommander’s Car by Katy Carr and Hannah Lovell will also be shown.

The festival opens on Wednesday, March 10 with the documentary The Runaway by Marek Pawłowski. The film is narrated by Kazimierz Piechowski, the last living fugitive, and organiser of the most spectacular escape from Auschwitz. The screening will be followed by discussion with the director and producer.

March and May will see a line up of films such as Zero, Little Moscow, My Flesh, My Blood, or Poland’s submission for 2010 Academy Awards, The Reverse, as well as some older and classic titles, including The Debt and Oscar nominated Promised Land.

Exeter Central Library and Boston Tea Party will show the classic Polish Film exhibition featuring artefacts from the Exeter University’s Bill Douglas Centre for the History of Cinema and Popular Culture as well as posters designed by artists of the Polish School of Poster Design.
