Since meeting Polish Auschwitz escapee Kazik Piechowski a few years back, Nottingham-born singer Katy Carr has fallen in love with her mother’s nation. Her fourth album is an ambitious tribute to the suffering and heroism of second world war Poland, with tales of lost lovers, Polish RAF flyers and the multitudes transported to Siberia by Russia. Its elegant cello-led arrangements embrace klezmer, gypsy jazz, classicism and folk song while Carr’s vocals shift between 1940s diva on Weronika, Kate Bush pyrotechnics on Travelling to You and folk song on Wojtek. Tender and brave in equal measure, Paszport proves a rich, rewarding creation by Neil Spencer
